1999 Catalina 470

Annapolis, Maryland, United States

Although our boat is capable of cruising the world, we chose coastal cruising and the Bahamas for our adventure, and what an adventure we had!

Among our favorite memories are sailing down the Hawk Channel into the Florida Keys and sailing from Key West up the west coast of Florida. With a 20 knot wind, plenty of sunshine and blue water, it’s a comfortable and relaxing sail. Sailing gives you a perspective of the land that so few people are privileged to see. Viewing the sunsets, sunrises, or the stars from your cockpit when there is no light pollution is magical.

Our travels have taken us racing through Hell Gate at nearly 11 knots, sailed us past the Statue of Liberty, Manhattan, and West Point. We’ve cruised the Erie Canal, the Great Lakes, Intracoastal Waterway, as well as the Hudson and Potomac Rivers. We’ve anchored in front of Mount Vernon on our way to Washington DC where we anchored in the Washington Channel and enjoyed a view of the Washington Monument from our “back yard.” We’ve cruised the Abacos Islands and will never forget our first view of the Bahamian blue water or the sea ray that greeted us. Most importantly, our life is forever changed by the people we’ve met along with way; many of whom are now dear friends. Now it's time for us to go "land yachting" and let someone else follow Dock's Orders!

Dock's Orders

Catalina's flagship 470 was designed and produced to meet the challenges of extended offshore cruising with a display of strength, innovative design, and engineering that clearly define the Catalina 470. A unique structural fiberglass grid is bonded to the hull and provides both strength for the hull and a massive foundation for securing bulkheads, equipment, engine and tanks.

Below there is a new standard of functionality and comfort. The galley is remarkable in it's amount of cold consumables and equipment space. The generous deck beam is carried well aft providing for an expansive cockpit with twin steering stations and large master stateroom below. The luxurious main saloon boasts adjustable arm chairs and deep banquet seating in soft, durable Ultra Leather in Light Oyster. The navigation station contains all necessary readouts. For easy maintenance, centrally located equipment clusters offer easy access to all pumps, valves and filters. At every turn, equipment and systems have been engineered to the most demanding blue water specifications. The articulated traveler rotates for and aft, spreading the load evenly over bearing surfaces for smoother main sheet handling and more precise trim. Custom cheek blocks and raised genoa tracks guide sheets straight aft to large, powerful Harken winches. Moreover a powerful double spreader rig and generous sail plan are balanced to deliver a remarkable combination of high performance and ease of handling.
